Hej my darling jetsetters! What a whirlwind five days in gorgeous Stockholm – it wasn’t only my first time in Sweden, but my first experience with the endlessly charming Scandinavian culture. I went into the experience with honestly zero expectations or knowledge except my many rendezvous with IKEA and the impossible-to-resist Swedish cinnamon buns (Dont judge me: I gauge food cultures by their national cinnamon bun game). And Sweden? It exceeded my imagination.
From dozens of charming bakeries, endless Fika breaks, beloved Archipelagos, rich pop culture history (ABBA, Alexander Skarsgård and Stieg Larsson, to name a few) to a decorated monarchy the people actually adore – Sweden is the international paradise of the Scandinavian culture, and I’m so thrilled to give you a short introduction to this must-visit destination.
I can honestly now say that I can’t wait to line up a few more trips to the Nordic lands. I was admittedly short on time this trip as I was in town for my first-ever TBEX (Travel Blogger Conference), but I did have a chance to explore the most iconic the meantime. Here is how to enjoy the best of Stockholm in one day – or two, if you stop every hour for Swedish pastries.
Check In: Haymarket by Scandic
Opened only last year and boasting 405 chic rooms, Haymarket in Stockholm is one of the most dazzling and officially the largest in the iconic city. A true ode to 1920s flair, the ambiance of the hotel is unbeatable and transports you to the cherished time of Hemingway, flappers and golden era of Northern Europe. From the light jazz music sereneding guests to the unmistakable golden decor and artistic details that sprawl every inch of this incredible hotel, the luxurious vintage experience here in one word: authentic.
THINGS TO DO IN STOCKHOLM
Go on a Seal Safari + Tour Archipelagos
It’s undeniable that the best way to savor Sweden’s unique geographical placement is by boat or ferry. If you think the city itself is gorgeous, just wait until you experience the stunning nature, island life and SEALS surrounding Stockholm. If you’re obsessed with animals like I am, this tour of adorable seal dreams is easy to fit in any one-day itinerary.
Visit the Stockholm Royal Palace
I feel like I cheated on my woman crush forever Kate Middleton, because the part of my heart reserved for monarchy obsession is now occupied a bit by Sweden and Princess Victoria. One impression I had during my short time in Stockholm is the nearly tangible national pride attatched to the royal family – they are beloved, widely considered humble and the latest generation of the royal family married only commoners, an easy way to the heart of the people.
Explore Old Town Stockholm & Have a Fika Break
If you want to experience Stockholm the Swedish way, there is one key term you need to know: Fika. It’s the beloved time (or multiple times) the Sweds dedicate to pausing for cofffee and sweets. I’ve been doing this my whole life and I’m now convinced I have Scandinavian roots. Take an outside seat (if weather permitting) at one of the many cozy cafes in the main old town square and admire the iconicly vibrant Swedish architecture with a coffee mug in one hand and Kanelbuller in the other.
Absorb Swedish Fashion Culture in Södermalm
Stockholm is the Scandinavian Paris of fashion. Home to international fashion brands such as Acne Studios and Our Legacy, it’s easy to discover that Sweden is the international starting point for hip and contemporary fashion of the future. Swedish women are also a bit apt to stocking their wardrobes with key pieces from other decades, so in neighborhoods like Södermalm you’ll find a huge array of vintage shopping options with charming fashion gems.
Indulge your history or pop culture nerd-ism at the Vasa OR ABBA museum
I honestly resent spending precious daylight hours in cavey and shiver-inducing museums, but once in a while I’ll suggest one because it’s simply a can’t-miss. Stockholm just happens to have two.
If you’re a history aficionado, The Vasa Museum will probably lead to a geek-out meltdown. Inside you’ll find the only fully intact ship from the 17th century (well, 98% intact). To see the level of artistic craftmanship that went into its creation and the modern science that restored it back to life is simply a marvel.
The ABBA museum should be on every pop culture lover’s bucket list. A total multi-sensory experience, this museum will cause a huge wave of nostalgia. Plus, there is a dance floor and plenty of singing “Dancing Queen” involved.
Stroll Along the Waterways
The best way to absorb the vibe of a city and discover iconic landmarks is always to get lost in it. A fabulous starting point for getting lost in Stockholm is by strolling alongside the city’s vast waterways. Not only do they boast the most Instagram-worthy and architecturally delicous vantage points of the city, the experience will fill your heart with a deeper understanding of Stockholm, its rich history and why it’s one of the most celebrated cities in Europe.
WHERE TO EAT IN STOCKHOLM
I was thoroughly impressed with the culinary options in Stockholm – totally international, totally delicious and YES, healthy options are plentiful! Scandinavians are completely into fitness and well-being – one aspect of their culture I bow down to. You can find matcha lattes, protein-rich smoothies and the latest health fad even at train stations.
I’m currently training for a marathon so healthy options are a must for me and even running in between meetings with tourism boards and conference activities, there was always a nourishing and delicous option nearby to keep my hangry pangs at bay. And even more options for authentic Swedish cusine at every corner.
Breakfast OR Fika @ Salt & Brod
I stumbled upon this bakery while on a morning run – because what better way to nourish your muscles than through Swedish coffee and pastries? There is a line out the door from morning to sunset. Fikas are perfectly acceptable around the clock, and I’m fine with that.
Lunch @ Husman’s Deli (Inside the iconic indoor Östermalms Saluhall food hall)
I promise these meatbals beat the frozen ones in the IKEA grocery section, really. While the Swedish say the best place to find authentic cuisine is in Grandma’s kitchen, they also say the dreamy savory can’t-even-so-good ones at Husman’s Deli come pretty close. If you’re traveling with a vegetarian such as myself or meatballs don’t fancy your taste buds, the Östermalms Saluhall has offering for every appetite and is dubbed one of the best food halls in the world.
Dinner @ Urban Deli
To add some balance to your pastry-filled day, grab your final Swedish indulgence at Urban Deli. The restaraunt and grocery store offers a more nourishing spin on traditional Swedish food and is a prime spot for Swedish hipster watching – the ultimate hipsters of the universe.
EXTRA TIP: Take advantage of Stockholm’s incredible public transit system and be wowed by art at the same time – each subway stop is an art exhibit – REALLY. There are actually tours dedicated to this but an easy way to include it in your day is by utilizing the train in between inter-city destinations.
