Dearest readers (old and new),
For those who have been on the journey for some time, you may remember The Modern Jetsetter was the name of my former blog. It was originally dreamt during a trip to northern Italy, where I decided to quit my corporate journalism job in Germany and create a content platform which married my passion for writing stories and celebrating the romantic era of European travel. During these two immensely influential years, I fell irrevocably enamoured with the stories of Europe with every destination, the trail of historical mysteries surrounding WWII and the continent’s royal families becoming the foundation for my future novels.
When we moved to New York City for my husband’s job, it quickly grew clear that maintaining an increasingly demanding travel brand rooted in Europe from Brooklyn wouldn’t be sustainable during that season of my life. More pressing, I felt my stories had outgrown freelance writing and confined in the blog concept. I craved time to reflect, and also time to transform the story which had been simmering in my heart for years into my first written manuscript.
As I presently feel the wheels of my life churning beneath me, the train now long departed from that station — clarity, pages and gratitude in tow — I am simply indebted to that decision, and the courage to make it.
Since moving back home to Europe this past autumn, there has been a gentle but consistent whisper in my heart beckoning me to reimagine The Modern Jetsetter into a vision far grander.
Four months at home made me listen. The silence of a pandemic lockdown. The profound absence of social media noise. The immersion in classic sources of inspiration: old magazines, novels and films. The nourishing of the creative spirit with simplicities. Witnessing the power of togetherness — as London, as Britain, as a continent. The ferocious cry to uplift human voice into light. The untold stories of Britain. The untold stories of Europe. The untold stories of the people who contribute to the enduring cultural fabric of these destinations. The souls who missed travel, not for the sake of holiday, but for the irreplaceable art it is in creating a timeless lifestyle at home. The future of The Modern Jetsetter was paved, imagined and destined with every ocean of emotion felt during this unforgettable time.
The Modern Jetsetter is a British magazine — digital and more excitingly, a print quarterly experience in 2021 — celebrating both British living and European escapes. It was created for the classic souls, who are caught between a digital generation and the way their hearts skip for the nostalgic turn of pages, a clever play of words, or photographs taken for the story, not an algorithm. For those who crave an emotional publication deeply loyal to the stories, people, magic and experiences of a destination. For those who are exhausted with the digital narrative of fast content and crave a publication steeped in tradition, playful curiosity, Britishness and European glamour — both digitally and on romantic pages delivered to your door. Each issue created as a themed cultural experience in either Britain or a hideaway corner of Europe. The Modern Jetsetter is you, and it’s for you.
My #1 guiding mantra: if the story you want to read doesn’t exist, write it. In this case, I’m here to do more than write it; I’m here to create it.
If you are interested in subscribing to the print magazine experience in 2021, please send an email to info@themodernjetsetter.com. Details on subscriptions, a new website (in works), and future writing opportunities will be announced in due course. The Modern Jetsetter will be growing digitally in the meantime — stay tuned for monthly Letters from the Editor for news.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being here. Let’s do this crazy thing.
Warmly,
Kortney xx
