Like many of readers, my wanderlust is fed by breathtaking images on Pinterest, where I discovered the stunning village of Hallstatt, Austria. This UNESCO World Heritage region went on my “to travel” list immediately. I’m so proud that it’s one of the first destinations I’m featuring on The Western Charm.
This enchanting mountainside village, located 73 short kilometres outside of Salzburg, is pure magic and truly left me speechless.
Whether you have a full weekend or only passing through, TWC’s travel guide to Hallstatt, Austria will help you in making the most of this beautiful lakeside village nestled soundly in the shadows of the Austrian Alps.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
- I was a bit surprised, but Hallstatt probably sees more tourists in a day than the town’s entire local population. Come with patience for crowds.
- Wear very comfortable shoes — there is miles of walking, stairclimbing and waterfall exploration to be done.
- The views of the Hallstättersee are mesmerizing. It seems with every ten steps and slight shift in sunlight you see it in a inredible new perspective. If you love taking photos, bring a memory card with lots of space.
WHAT TO DO
Salt Mine
If you’re in Hallstatt during the spring or summer, you MUST make a visit to Hallstatt’s ancient salt mine. Your inner Anthropologist will geek out hard as you’re transported to the Bronze Age. The railway up to the mine, nestled way up in the Alps, is half the glory.
Bone Church / St. Michael’s Church
St. Michael’s Church, resting for centuries alongisde the shadowy emerald waters of the Hallstättersee is one of the most picturesque churches in Europe. It also has a dark side: in the basement of St. Michael’s is a room full painted human skulls, hence the name “Bone Church.”
TIP: Be sure to visit the church’s graveyard. Strangely, it has one of the most breathtaking views of the surrounding alpine haven.
Waldbachstub Waterfall
This is one of the most serene and soul-satisfying experiences I’ve ever had. As if Hallstatt wasn’t already the most spectacular showcase of nature, a short hike to the Waldbachstub Waterfall is a must on any Hallstatt itinerary. It will become one of your favorite travel memories.
Shop for Artisan Salt Goods
You’ll notice a handful of artisan shops in Hallstatt selling local salt goods. The variety of salty delights make perfect souvenirs for family and add a new reason to look forward to your personal at-home spa time.
Rent a Boat
BUCKET LIST ALERT! If you think the views of Hallstatt are gorgeous from land, just wait until you’re seeing this breathtaking landscape from a boat, gently swaying to the gentle ripples of the Hallstättersee. Enjoying the Alps from this perspective is an experience every traveler should add to their adventure bucket list. Renting a boat in Hallstatt is simple and completly worth it — try this centrally located boat rental shop when planning your trip.
Take in the Views (really take them in)
For travel bloggers and tourists alike, it’s easy to get caught up with taking photos and checking in on Facebook and making sure Snapchat, Instagram and aunt Pam on Facebook knows where you are. But it’s SO important to mindully enjoy where you are. Sit down for 20 minutes along the Hallstättersee, totally disconnected, and comprehend the natural beauty before you.
WHERE TO STAY
If staying overnight there are two Hallstatt hotels I found enchanting sleeping experiences:
Heritage Hotel is easily the most iconic and popular in Hallstatt. Located right in the center of the village, the views don’t get any better. Oh, and there is an awesome restaurant overlooking the lake. This is probably one of the most romantic hotel/eating experienes in the world if you’re traveling here with your love — PERFECT for honeymoons.
Gasthof Simony is perfect for those up for more unique and one-of-a-kind lodging experience. This place is built like a dollhouse makes you feel like you’re a character living in a fairyale (really). I’m betting birds come to your bedside in the morning as an alarm.
WHERE TO EAT
Breakfast & Coffee at Maislinger
From homemade bread and Austrian pastries to typical Hallstatt delicacies, this small and cozy café is a heaven for those with a sweet tooth for breakfast. Ask about traditional Hallstatt cookies and they’ll guide you on sampling the some of the most crumbly, scrummy and satisfying treats ever. Come with an appetite!
Lunch at Café Derbl
Try locally brewed Hallstatt beer and the region’s take on alpine comfort food: goulash and käsespätzle (my favorite).
Dinner at Heritage Hotel
Enjoy stunning views of the panaromic paradise and eat delish local hearty Austrian food the same time? Yes, do it.
