If one were to open my closet (or Daniel’s closet), they would find a mountainous stack of flannel and quickly label us as obsessed — but trust me, there is a summer style reason behind it.
Ever since discovering the darling Vermont Flannel storefront during a ski holiday in Woodstock, I’ve carried at least one flannel in my weekender bag or suitcase no matter where the destination is. Confession: I haven’t spent a summer month in the United States in over six years. Usually this is my time to already be in Italy or exploring a new nook of southern Europe, but for once I wanted to spend June celebrating the great American summer. For those breezy coastal nights along the shore, sailing mornings or a chilly night of roasting s’mores by the fire…my flannel habit is the key to keeping New England road trips cozy.

Their flannel blanket has a permanent home in our car trunk, as it has an uncanny talent of fitting into all weekend adventures. Another staple you’ll find in my weekender bag are the lightweight flannels and flannel pajamas. I usually skip a beach cover up and simply layer these over my bikini or pair with white shorts to have a breezy coast-friendly casual look for morning coffee runs or walks along the harbor with the dogs (who, of course, have their very own personal Vermont Flannel scarves for stormy mornings). The only caveat to making Vermont Flannel a part of your travel wardrobe is it will automatically become a part of the family wardrobe. Daniel is a notorious flannel thief and often steals my favorite staples, makes them his own and, admittedly, works it better than I do. If there is a practical man in your life who doesn’t yet covet Vermont Flannel threads, it’s the gift he will wear and obsess over (with pride) for decades to come.
